Bupa Kenya wraps Healthy Cities challenge with 17m steps

Bupa Global has concluded its first Healthy Cities Challenge in Kenya, with employees, customers, brokers and partners logging a combined 17,012,696 steps over the month-long campaign.

The challenge ended with a community walk at Karura Forest, which brought together 130 participants.

It formed part of Bupa’s Healthy Cities initiative, a global movement aimed at building healthier, more climate-resilient cities. The programme also channelled participants’ activity into charitable funding through the Bupa Foundation.

Bupa said rising temperatures, worsening air pollution and shrinking green spaces are making it harder for people in urban areas, where most of the world’s population now lives, to stay healthy.

The challenge builds on Bupa’s existing community investments in Kenya. The insurer has partnered with Lifecare on medical outreach programmes and with Griot Impact on community borehole projects to expand access to clean water. It is also exploring a partnership with Friends of Karura Forest on conservation and community health activities.

Uditha Jayaratne, Bupa’s CEO and Principal Officer for Kenya and Managing Director for Africa, said the campaign linked health outcomes to environmental action.

“In a changing climate, supporting people’s health and protecting our environment goes hand in hand. Every step taken throughout June for the Bupa Healthy Cities challenge helped unlock funding to support greener, healthier communities, while encouraging people to embrace healthier lifestyles,” Jayaratne said.

He said the initiative reflected Bupa’s broader purpose. “Healthy Cities brings that purpose to life by encouraging preventive health while creating lasting social and environmental impact. Together, we’ve shown that collective action, one step at a time, can make a meaningful difference,” he said.

Healthy Cities has expanded internationally since 2023 and has helped unlock more than Sh1.4 billion for projects that restore nature in urban environments. It has reached over one million people across more than 50 cities in 24 countries.

The Kenya edition reinforces Bupa’s broader commitment to preventive healthcare, sustainability and community engagement in the market.
