Absa Bank Kenya has commended Athletics Kenya and the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports after Nairobi successfully bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking the first time the global competition will be held in Africa.
The bank attributed the milestone to Kenya’s decades of athletic achievement and the contributions of athletes, coaches and support teams who have strengthened the country’s position in international athletics.
Absa Marketing and Corporate Affairs Director Mwihaki Wachira said the hosting rights represent a significant moment for Kenya and the continent.
“We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate this historic achievement for Kenya, Africa and the global athletics community. Bringing the World Athletics Championships to African soil for the first time marks a defining moment that reflects decades of excellence by Kenyan athletes, the leadership of Athletics Kenya, and the collective efforts of everyone who has worked to elevate the sport. For years, our investment in events such as the Absa Kip Keino Classic and Absa Sirikwa Classic has been driven by a belief that Kenya belongs on the global stage.”
Absa said it has invested close to KES 2 billion in Kenya’s sports ecosystem over the past decade, including six years as the title sponsor of the Absa Kip Keino Classic, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting held in Nairobi.
The bank also supports the Absa Sirikwa Classic Cross Country, a World Athletics Gold Level Cross Country Tour event hosted at Lobo Village in Eldoret. According to Absa, its sponsorship of these competitions has helped showcase Kenya’s capacity to host international athletics events.
Beyond event sponsorship, Absa supports athlete welfare through financial literacy programmes conducted across training camps. The initiatives aim to help athletes manage their earnings and strengthen their long-term financial security.
Ultimately, Absa said its partnership with Athletics Kenya, which is extending for nearly a decade, reflects its continued investment in developing local talent and supporting the growth of athletics in Kenya.
