Old Mutual Launches Eldoret Market Storm to Boost Financial Wellness Awareness

Old Mutual has launched a week-long Market Storm in Eldoret to promote financial literacy and expand access to financial services among customers, businesses and communities in the region.

The campaign opened with a financial literacy session for athletes, bringing together retired sportsmen and women alongside those still competing. Discussions focused on financial planning, saving, investment and risk management to help athletes secure their finances during and after their sporting careers.

“Our Market Storm is about meeting customers where they are, listening to them and helping them make more informed financial decisions. Starting the Eldoret engagement with athletes was particularly significant because financial wellness is as important during an active sporting career as it is after the finish line. We are also pleased to build on the engagements we have already held in other parts of the country,” said Martin Karenju, Managing Director, Old Mutual Life Assurance Kenya.

The initiative comes as findings from the Old Mutual Financial Wellness Monitor 2025 revealed gaps in retirement planning among working Kenyans. While 91% of surveyed workers reported having a specific savings goal, only 37% said they were saving for retirement. Among those not saving for retirement, 34% had no alternative retirement plan.

The report also found that 54% of working Kenyans had the same or more debt than the previous year, while 40% reported using their savings to meet daily expenses. The findings indicate continued challenges in balancing immediate financial needs with long-term savings and investment.

Old Mutual General Insurance Kenya Managing Director Japheth Ogalloh urged households and businesses to assess their insurance coverage in preparation for projected El Niño weather conditions.

“Protection is an essential part of financial wellness. With the projected El Niño conditions likely to heighten exposure to weather-related risks, this is an important time for households, motorists and businesses to review whether they have adequate cover. Insurance provides a financial safety net that can help people and businesses recover faster when unexpected events occur,” said Ogalloh.

The Eldoret engagement follows similar Market Storm activities in Thika, Nakuru and Mombasa. The campaign covers savings, investments, insurance, health and financial protection, with Old Mutual teams scheduled to conduct customer engagements and financial wellness discussions across Eldoret throughout the week.
