TECNO Bets on Battery, 5G and AI as Kenyan Professionals Rethink What “Premium” Means

As mobile work replaces desk-bound routines, TECNO's newly launched POVA Curve 2 5G leans on an 8,000mAh battery, Dimensity 7100 5G processing and Practical AI tools to court Kenya's on-the-move professionals.

TECNO has launched the POVA Curve 2 5G in Kenya, positioning the device around sustained performance rather than branding, as smartphone buying habits among professionals shift from status signalling towards day-long productivity.

The device is built around an 8,000mAh battery, a 7.42mm body, a weight of approximately 195g, the MediaTek Dimensity 7100 5G chipset, 5G connectivity, eSIM support and enhanced signal technology, according to TECNO.

The launch comes as Kenyan professionals increasingly conduct business away from the desk, with client calls taken from cars, presentations arriving on WhatsApp minutes before meetings, payment approvals handled on site, and video meetings running between appointments.

Battery capacity has emerged as one of the more closely watched specifications in this shift. The POVA Curve 2 5G’s 8,000mAh battery is designed to sustain calls, emails, navigation, video meetings and content consumption through a full working day, addressing a common trade-off in smartphone design in which larger batteries typically add bulk. TECNO says the 7.42mm body and roughly 195g weight are intended to deliver that additional power without the device feeling unwieldy to carry between meetings, site visits and flights.

Processing power tells a similar story. The Dimensity 7100 5G chipset is built to handle multiple demanding applications running simultaneously, from email and WhatsApp to spreadsheets, presentations and video calls, as well as content editing, document review and cloud-based business platforms accessed away from a desk.

Connectivity remains central to the proposition. Kenyan users on 5G networks consumed an average of 53.5GB of data in the third quarter of the 2025/26 financial year, the Communications Authority of Kenya has reported, while 4G population coverage stood at 97.3 percent and 5G coverage at 30 percent by June 2025, alongside continued migration from older network technologies. The POVA Curve 2 5G’s G1 and SE1 Dual Enhanced Signal Chipsets, combined with 5G and eSIM support, are designed to improve connectivity in difficult signal environments and give users more flexibility in managing network connections.

AI Positioned as a Practical Tool, Not a Showcase Feature

TECNO has also built its device strategy around what it calls Practical AI, aimed at making artificial intelligence useful in health, learning, life and work rather than serving as a standalone selling point. At Mobile World Congress 2026, the company outlined an expanded AI strategy alongside an upgraded Ella AI assistant, and said its AI systems processed more than 500 million user requests in 2025, including around 100 million image processing tasks.

In Kenya, that approach is being applied to needs beyond conventional smartphone use. TECNO’s AI Virtual Consultant can read payment messages and SMS to support automatic record keeping and M-PESA-linked money summaries, a feature aimed at helping traders and small business owners track sales and manage cash flow. For students, Ella can convert lengthy documents or YouTube content into concise study notes, while TECNO has introduced voice-guided health information, including local language support, aimed at making basic wellness information more accessible to families.

The company has additionally been developing agentic capabilities through EllaClaw, designed to help users complete multi-step tasks across their digital environment while retaining control over sensitive actions, as part of a wider push towards localisation alongside intelligence in its Kenya rollout.

TECNO frames the POVA Curve 2 5G’s combination of battery life, processing power, connectivity and AI features as part of a broader shift in how smartphone value is defined, moving away from price and materials towards devices that sustain a full working day, handle increasing workloads and stay connected in difficult conditions. The device is marketed under the tagline “Own Your Move.”
