itel Launches Case-Free POWER 80 Smartphone in Kenya

The itel POWER 80 arrives in Kenyan stores today at a recommended retail price of KSh 19,499 (approximately $151), positioned as a smartphone tough enough to skip the protective case altogether.

itel has launched the POWER 80 in Kenya, a 4G smartphone the company says is engineered to withstand daily wear without a protective case, backed by four independent durability certifications from accredited international testing bodies.

The device is available from today at itel stores, Phone Place outlets, Jumia Kenya, and authorised retailers nationwide, with itel noting that final pricing may vary by retailer and that flexible payment plans are available at participating stores.

itel is pitching the POWER 80 against an industry norm in which durability is treated as an add-on rather than a built-in feature. The company argues that cases, screen protectors, and repair costs can add up to more than the price of the phone itself over its lifetime, and that the POWER 80 is designed to remove that added expense.

Four Certifications, One Design Philosophy

The phone carries an SGS 5-Star Gold Drop-Proof rating from SGS International in Geneva, following repeat drop tests from up to two metres onto hard surfaces. It also holds MIL-STD-810 certification, the US Department of Defense’s environmental durability standard, which itel notes is uncommon among smartphones in this price bracket.

On water and dust resistance, the POWER 80 carries both IP68 and IP69 ratings, covering everything from splashes and accidental submersion to high-pressure water jets typically associated with industrial equipment.

Underpinning the certifications is a shock-absorption cage frame designed to redirect impact energy away from the screen and internal components, paired with reinforced corner buffers that sit slightly proud of the display to prevent direct contact during drops. The back and mid-frame use a high-strength composite designed to flex rather than crack, while ports, seams, and speaker grilles are sealed against water and dust ingress.

Greyson, Marketing Manager at itel Kenya, framed the launch as a response to a familiar consumer dilemma. “Why should Kenyans buy a phone, a case, and a screen protector just to trust their phone will survive the week? We built the POWER 80 so the answer is: you don’t have to. The durability is in the phone itself. That’s what Hakuna cover, bado means,” he said.

The Swahili phrase, which translates roughly to “no case, still tough,” anchors itel’s marketing for the device.

Specifications and Availability

Beyond durability, the POWER 80 is built around a 7,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging, a 6.78-inch HD+ display optimised for outdoor visibility, and a Unisoc T7250 octa-core processor paired with 8GB of RAM, expandable to 16GB, and 128GB of internal storage. It ships running Android 16 and is available in Meteor Black, Titanium Silver, and Solar Orange.

itel has also tied the launch to a promotional push, inviting buyers to join its Kenya WhatsApp community for weekly POWER 80 giveaways, exclusive offers, and early access to future launches, with live draws held every Sunday at 8:00 PM.
