Nanyuki court hands man 10 years in prison for vandalising an electricity meter board

Nanyuki Law Court has sentenced a man to 10 years in prison or a fine of KShs. 5 million for vandalizing a customer’s electricity meter board at Riverside estate in Timau town, Meru County.

The suspect, Brian Wahome, was arrested and booked at Timau police station before he was arraigned at Nanyuki law courts, where he was charged with stealing energy equipment contrary to section 169 (1) (c) of the Energy Act 2019.

He pleaded guilty and was handed the sentence by Lisper Gakii Nyaga, the resident magistrate at Nanyuki law courts. At the time of his arrest, Mr. Wahome was found in possession of two cutouts, a switch, and the meter board.

Kenya Power’s Ag. Security Services Manager Maj. Paul Nyaga Gichovi (Rtd.) welcomed the judgment, terming it a big boost to the fight against vandalism.

“This sentence will go a long way to deter vandalism and other illegal activities on the network. We are relentless in the fight against these crimes as they pose the danger of loss of life through electrocution and undermine the quality of power supply, beyond financial losses to the Company,” said Maj. Nyaga.

He added, “In the fight against illegal activities on the electricity distribution network, we have enlisted the support of various stakeholders including the National Government Administration Officers. I urge members of the public to support this fight by reporting any suspicious activities on the network to the nearest police station or Kenya Power office.”

The sentence comes four months after a similar one was handed by the Engineer law court in Nyandarua to two suspects who were found guilty of vandalizing and siphoning oil from a 100kva transformer and using the oil to cook potato chips.
