New program to equip local teachers with laptops launched

Casa da Louisa (CDL) has launched a new programme to equip teachers in public schools across Kenya with a laptop. Known as The Walimu Co the project also seeks to provide internet, certified professional development and solar power for  KES 1800 – 2500 per month. 

The CDL Group is partnering with global tech, regional banks and financiers (including RentCo & House of Procurement) for this project. Teachers can lease to own the bundled laptops for a period of 1 to 3 years. . 

The firm says the Walimu Co.‘s goal is to make digital education accessible and affordable for all African teachers by leveraging funding from top brands like Microsoft and HP, as well as Intel and Dell.

The first phase of this project which is set to roll out soon will see the company launch 3000 devices in Kenya, with the aim of scaling to up to 200,000. Lease options are available from 1 to 3 years. Furthermore, the company has partnered with Mirai Partners to provide teacher development programs and training, with Safaricom to distribute data bundles, solar power systems, and with Rentco.

There is no better solution to empower a generation than having informed, inspired and digitally informed teachers.” Nyla Tariq, Founder of Casa da Louisa (CDL) says. 

Once the programme goes live, teachers will be able to register through CDL’s website. The firm says it intends to roll out the program across East Africa, including Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda.
